Concentrations of Heavy Metals in Different Parts of the Byssus of Perna Viridis

چکیده
The phenomenon of metal distribution and redistribution due to contamination is becoming interesting in the literature. In this study, the distribution of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn were determined in different parts (root, byssus stem, two regions of byssal threads [proximal and distal] and attachment plaque) of the byssus of the green-lipped mussel Perna viridis collected from a metal-contaminated site at Kg. Pasir Puteh and an uncontaminated site at Kuala Belungkor. Despite different metal contamination levels as indicated by the heavy metal concentrations in the sediments, the attachment plaque recorded the highest levels of Cd and Zn when compared to the other parts of the byssus and the soft tissue. Generally, heavy metal levels in most parts of the byssus were elevated in contaminated mussels when compared to those in uncontaminated mussels. This phenomenon indicated metal redistribution in the different parts of byssus due to metal contamination. Different binding affinities due to different protein compositions is believed to be the reason for the different heavy metal levels found in the different parts of the byssus.

De novo assembly and comparative transcriptome analysis of the foot from Chinese green mussel (Perna viridis) in response to cadmium stimulation
The Chinese green mussel, Perna viridis, is a marine bivalve with important economic values as well as biomonitoring roles for aquatic pollution. Byssus, secreted by the foot gland, has been proved to bind heavy metals effectively. In this study, using the RNA sequencing technology, we performed comparative transcriptomic analysis on the mussel feet with or without inducing by cadmium (Cd). Our...

Total concentrations and speciation of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) in surface sediment samples were correlated with the respective metal measured in the total soft tissue of the green-lipped mussel Perna viridis, collected from water off the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The aim of this study is to relate the possible differences in the accumulation patterns of the h...

Background: A pot experiment was conducted to determine the toxic effects of some heavy metals on the plant growth and seed yield of maize (Zea mays L.). Materials and Metheds: Heavy metals Mn, Pb, Cd, Cr and Co individually and in combinations were added as chloride salts in solutions to the pots before sowing. The test plants for were harvested after 80 days of germination and evaluated f...
متن کاملToxicities and tolerances of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in a primary producer (Isochrysis galbana) and in a primary consumer (Perna viridis).
Studies on toxicities and tolerances of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) in the brown alga Isochrysis galbana and in the green-lipped mussel Perna viridis were conducted by short-term bioassays using endpoints growth production and mortality, respectively. The 5-day EC(50) and 24-h LC(50) of these heavy metals were determined in the brown alga and mussel, respectively. The EC(...
